6 Blended Learning Models

A child works diligently at a computer as NexTech HighSchool explains their 6 blended learning modules.

Blended learning, online education, and virtual classrooms may appear to be different terms that describe the same process or situation — but they aren't! Blended learning itself can be broken down into several subtypes, and each one has its particular strengths. In this article, you will learn more about:

  • Six unique types of blended learning that combine varying amounts of face-to-face instruction and online learning
  • The benefits of blended learning for specific subgroups of students

If you're new to the nontraditional classroom environment, you may have questions about terms you encounter both in your reading as well as when speaking to teachers and administrators. Below are six types of blended learning environments that incorporate technology and face-to-face learning while promoting student independence.

The Face-To-Face Driver Model

This model is great for classrooms that cater to diverse students with wide-ranging abilities and educational needs. Not all of these students will complete online modules, but those who have already mastered core topics can use virtual education to accelerate their learning.

The Rotation Model

Many elementary schools have a form of this model in place already with different "centers" or "stations" that students can switch between throughout the school day. This method may work well for classrooms in which some students are accelerated — and can switch to independent, virtual learning when it's time for reading or math — while other students have face-to-face interaction with the teacher during this time.

The Flex Model

Within this blended learning model, teachers function more like guides or helpers than as lecturers. Students who do well with this model are those that do not do well in a traditional classroom because they struggle with attention, participate in internship programs during the day, or attend part-time school for various reasons.

Online Lab School Model

Classes that take place 100% online are ideal for students who need to work part-time or full-time, those with family obligations such as dependent children, and individuals who do not thrive in a traditional classroom. Teachers may or may not be certified, depending on the program. Most online lab schools have trained aides available who can help students when they need it.

Self-Blend Model

This model is ideal for extremely motivated students or those who enjoy learning completely independently of a traditional classroom. Students can select courses for college credit (while still in secondary school) and courses they are interested in. Like the flex model of learning, the self-blend model involves a high degree of motivation and self-direction and should not be used with students struggling in the classroom.

The Online Driver Model

In this blended teaching model, students complete their work in an online space and use video calls, discussion boards, and other online platforms as their classrooms. They can check in with teachers regularly through virtual means, and they may attend school full-time or part-time depending on their life situation and how their school is structured. This is an excellent option for students with disabilities or those who have nontraditional schedules.
